Overview

The department of Humanities and Social Sciences offers both compulsory and elective courses in Humanistic studies, Social sciences, English, Technical Communication, Professional Communication, and Mass Media to the students of First Degree and Higher Degree. With its well-qualified faculty members, the department participates in various training programmes, conferences, workshops, research projects, etc. with commitment and dedication. The department aims at enriching the knowledge and awareness of students in various areas of humanistic studies and enhancing their creative and critical thinking skills thereby enabling them to become well-rounded human beings and to excel in their professional and personal lives.

Research

Faculty members carry out and guide research in the following areas:

 

English language and literature, Mass media, Professional Communication, Soft Skills, Philosophy, Psychology, Sociology, Political Science, Public Policy, Maritime Studies, Spiritual Intelligence.

 

Two faculty members are pursuing research and working towards their Ph.D. degree. Two faculty members are carrying out research projects funded by ICSSR and UGC.  Four research proposals have been  submitted to ICSSR and ICMR to attract financial support and are awaiting results.  Faculty members have guided and are guiding Ph.D. students of both BITS and other Institutions and also act Ph.D. examiners and paper setters for various universities.

 

The Department has 6 full-time,8 part time Research Scholars and 2 lecturers pursuing their Ph.D.

Faculty

The Department has 15 faculty members with 87% of them with Ph.D. degrees. There are 9 faculty members in English, Communication and Media Studies and 6 faculty members  in areas namely. Sociology, Philosophy, Political Studies, etc. With 1 Professor, 3 Associate Professors, 7 Assistant Professors, 2 Lecturers and  2 Visiting Faculty ( Associate and Assistant Professor) the Department is not only involved in teaching courses but also contribute to the Institute’s administration by actively participating in its various activities related to PR, Publications, Practice School, Academic Counseling, General Administration, etc. Faculty members guide PhD students, examine PhD thesis for other institutions, publish research papers in reputed national and international journals, publish books, write columns in leading newspapers, review research papers, present papers in conferences; act as members of editorial board in reputed journals and members of the Senate and Board of Studies in external institutions; members of various committees at BITS Pilani.

Dr.Rayson K. Alex presented paper entitled “Nature-culture-sacred continuum in the ecodocumentary, Have you Seen the Arana?” in the International Conference on “Transmediating Culture(s)?” organized by the Department of English, University of Szczecin, Poland, from 17-19 November 2016.


Dr.Rayson K. Alex  delivered an Invited Lecture entitled “Nature-culture-sacred Continuum as Ecocultural Ethnography: My Experience with the Mudugar” at the Institute of Ethnography, Anthropology and Culture, University of Warsaw, Poland, on 21 November 2016.

Dr.Anoop George presented a Paper Titled: Engaging With Modernity: Revisiting The Ontology Of The Self As A Meaning Giving Being” , University of London, UK, 8 to 11 November 2016.


Dr. Reena Cheruvalath Presented a Paper Titled: Meta-moral cognition and social relationship: A theoretical perspective, International Conference for Social Sciences and Humanities, University of London, UK, 8 to 11 November 2016.

 

 

Prof.Meenakshi Raman presented a paper on the “Importance of Effective Communication in Healthcare Settings” at the 81st Annual International Conference of the Association of Business Communication held in Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA during 19-22 October 2016.

 

 

Dr. Amitendu Bhattacharya presented a paper titled : A Poet of/for India: The Rediscovery of Kabir through the Translations by Rabindranath Tagore and Arvind Krishna Mehrotra" at the ASIAN TRANSLATION TRADITIONS CONFERENCE 7 organized by the Monash Asia Institute and the School of Languages, Literatures, Cultures and Linguistics at Monash University Melbourne, in partnership with the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, and hosted at the Monash University Malaysia Campus, from 26 to 29 September 2016


   
 

Dr.R P Pradhan has received a grant of Rs.15 Lacs from ICSSR for pursuing a project titled   

Agenda 2020: India’s Maritime Infrastructure, Governance & Naval Diplomacy. ( April 2016)

 

 
 
 
 
 
 
Dr. Amitendu Bhattacharya, Assistant Professor in the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, visited Cape Town and Stellenbosch in South Africa to attend and present a paper in the 17th Triennial Conference of the Association for Commonwealth Literature and Language Studies (ACLALS) from 10 to 15 July 2016. Entitled "Universities at the Crossroads and the Humanities at a Dead-End: What is the Way Forward?".

Dr. Reena Cheruvalath presented paper on Internet Neutrality, Social Justice And Ethics: A Kantian Perspective in The Asian Conference on Ethics, Religion & Philosophy, The Art Centre of Kobe, held on March 31- April-3, Japan, 2016.


Dr. Anoop George presented a paper titled “The Good Sense of the Modern: Revisiting Heidegger’s Social Ontology” at International conference on Ethics, Religion and Philosophy, held at The Art Center, Kobe, Japan from March 31st to April 3rd 2016.


Prof. Meenakshi Raman received the outstanding paper award at ICMIS- 15 held in Bangkok during September 18-20 2015.
