About us

The Department of Chemistry at BITS Pilani, Hyderabad Campus is devoted towards teaching and research. Some of our major research thrust areas include green chemistry, nano materials, polymers, bio-inorganic chemistry, medicinal chemistry, environmental analytical chemistry, synthetic organic chemistry and computational chemistry.

  • Programmes Offered

    The Department offers M.Sc. (Hons.) and Ph.D. programmes in Chemistry :
    • The M.Sc. (Hons.) program is a four-year program with provision for a dual degree extending to five years total duration. The input to the M.Sc. (Hons.) is through the entrance test (BITSAT) with the minimum qualification being a pass in the 10+2 system with at least 80% marks in Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics. There are about 30 students admitted every year for the M.Sc. (Hons.) program. The academic curriculum for this program is revised constantly and is comparable to any international institution. At the end of the program the students gain industrial experience if they opt for the Practice School (PS) program. Optionally, students may choose to work on an academic thesis of 4-5 months duration.
    • Ph.D. admissions are based on written exam followed by interview at Hyderabad campus. Currently there are a number of full time research scholars pursuing research in different areas of Chemistry leading to Ph. D. degree. The Ph.D. students are provided fellowships from the sponsored project grants as well as BITS institute support.

  • Research

    The department is actively engaged in research in the areas of synthetic organic chemistry, environmental analytical chemistry, polymers, bioinorganic/inorganic chemistry, nanomaterials and computational chemistry. Emphasis on undergraduate research is also given in terms of the lab oriented and study oriented projects.  Funded projects from DST, CSIR, UGC and BITS are in progress and the faculty members publish and present their work in leading peer reviewed journals and conferences.

  • Awards

    • Prof. N.Rajesh was recognized as an outstanding reviewer for the Journal of Environ. Chem. Eng. by Elsevier in 2015. 
    • Ms. Shweta Pawar was awarded t.he DST-Inspire fellowship to continue her PhD studies at BITS Pilani Hyderabad Campus. 
    • M.Sc students, Mr. Abhijeet Kumar Singh and Mr. Shashwat Agarwal were finalists in the prestigious HULT prize, held in Dubai. This award is meant to encourage young social entrepreneurs.

1. Dr. Kavita Joshi, Sr. Scientist, National Chemical Laboratory, Pune, visited the campus and delivered a talk on March 29, 2016. 
2. Prof. Brindaban C. Ranu, Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science, Jadavpur, Kolkata, visited the campus and delivered a talk on November 5, 2015.
3. Dr. V Balaram, Scientist Emeritus, CSIR - National Geophysical Research Institute, Hyderabad, visited the campus and delivered a talk on October 27, 2015.
4. Prof. Benjaram M Reddy, Chief Scientist CSIR- Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, Hyderabad visited the campus and delivered a talk on October 9, 2015.
5. Dr. Pushpita Ghosh from Center for Theoretical Biological Physics, Rice University, USA delivered a talk on July 7, 2015.
6. Two new labs, (a) Spectroscopy, (b) Materials Chemistry & Catalysis were inaugurated on May 8, 2015.


Chemistry Association


Lecture by Prof. C. P. Rao, Department of Chemistry, IIT-Bombay, Aug 31, 2016. 
Alchemy, The Chemistry Association was formed in 2008 with an inaugural talk on Green Chemistry by Prof. V. S. Rao. Alchemy also brings out a newsletter called Chemistry Chronicles and a semester magazine called Elixir. Under the auspices of Alchemy, various events are being organized every semester.
