About us

The Department of Computer Science and Information Systems at BITS Hyderabad strives to produce engineers of tomorrow by imparting instruction with advanced curriculum, and research methodologies in modern areas of Computer Science. The Computer Science and Information Systems department at BITS Hyderabad started admitting students in the year 2008 in B.E (Hons) Computer Science, M.Sc(Tech) Information Systems, M.E(Computer Sc), and Ph.D.(CS) degrees. From the academic 2013-14, we started offering a new program M.E(Computer Sc with specialization in Information Security) for B.Sc(Maths and Physics) graduates, to cater to the present day requirements for skilled IT Professionals in the field of Information Security. The department has a vibrant student strength of about 600. The department has a good mix of faculty with experience from reputed academic institutes and industry. The department offers a wide range of courses spanning areas like Algorithms, Theoretical Computer Science, Computer Architecture and Organization, Systems and Networks, Databases, Software engineering and Soft computing. The department lays emphasis on hands-on aspects through laboratories, computer oriented projects, research presentations to make the students industry-ready. The department consistently attracts top BITSAT scorers every year. The Department is committed to achieving high standards of excellence in academic and research activities over the coming years.

The department has faculty expertise at Ph.D. level with research focus on Systems & Computer Networks, Algorithms and Theoretical Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems including databases and Computer Applications (AI, Robotics, Graphics, etc). The department has full time research scholars as well as part time research scholars. The full time scholars pursue their research in these areas with funding from BITS, TCS, UGC, DeitY, Pregress Software, Intel and other agencies. Faculty from the department have research collaboration with several universities in India and abroad. Under Graduate and  Post Graduate students participate in research activities of faculty members. The students also get research experience by visiting abroad under several fellowships like Viterbi-India and DAAD etc.

Since its inception, the Department of Computer Science and Information Systems has been organizing guest lectures from Industry and academia. Many eminent professionals from Industry have delivered talks in entrepreneurship, challenges & rewards in software engineering, quantum reality and objective semantic information etc. The department has also organized seminars and workshops on topics like business challenges in data warehousing and data mining, lean for leadership: lessons from corporate jungle, challenges in animation industry, network design and development strategies for sensor networks etc. to make them Industry ready. The faculty members from the department supervise the activities of the two student associations, CSA, and EXTEK. The department also helps students from all other streams of engineering and science in honing their programming skills by conducting hands-on training programs and certificate courses from time to time on topics like web programming, data structures, object oriented design, Android programming etc. The department helps the student members in managing the activities of the ACM Student Chapter at BITS Hyderabad Campus.

1. "Dr. G. Geethakumari has been elevated to the grade of IEEE senior member from February 2018. The department of CSIS, BITS Hyderabad congratulates her for this success." 
2. Prof. Ponnurangam Kumaraguru from IIIT, Delhi delivered an invited ACM distinguished Talk on " Fake Content, Scams, Privacy, Manipulated Accounts on Social Media" on 16th Feb 2018. 
3. Dr. Amit Chattopadhyay from IIIT Bangalore gave an invited talk on "Geometry, Topology, and Computing" on 2nd February 2018. 
4. Mr. Ravi Meduri from Innominds visited the department on 23rd Jan 2018 and delivered a talk on Advanced Machine Learning Techniques. 
5. Prof. Nigamanth Sridhar from Cleveland State University visited the department on 23rd Jan 2018 and interacted with the faculty on different aspects of research and graduate program in Cleveland State University. 
6. Dr. Aruna Malapati is awarded "Prof. Indira Parikh 50 women education leaders" on 23rd Nov 2017 in World Education Congress at Mumbai. The Department of CSIS congratulates her for this achievement. 
7. Prof. Chittaranjan Hota has been elevated to the grade of IEEE senior member from August 2017. The department of CSIS, BITS Hyderabad congratulates him for this success. 
8. Sanket Mishra, research scholar of the department receives TCS PhD fellowship. He works in the area of Internet of Things. 
9. Dr. Harsha Vardhan Simhadri from Microsoft Research, Bangalore (MSR) visited the department and delivered research talks to students and faculty. He also discussed possible ways of collaborations between MSR and the department.

1. "Lightweight Code Self-verification for Internet of Things (IoT) Devices", under Indo-Dutch Joint Research Program for ICT funded by DeitY-NWO-Progress-Irdeto with a project outlay of 380, 000 Euros (INR 2.6 Crores) from July, 2015 to July, 2019. (Investigators : Prof. Chittaranjan Hota and Researchers from Vrije University, Amsterdam).
2. "Design and Development of Digital Forensic Tools for Cloud IaaS", Grant amount: Rs 55 lakhs, funded by Department of Information Technology (DIT), Ministry of Communication & Information Technology, Govt. of India, New Delhi, 2013. (Chief Investigator: Dr. G Geethakumari, Co-Investigator: Mr. Digambar Powar).
