The Department of Computer Science and Information Systems (CSIS) at BITS Hyderabad strives to produce engineers of tomorrow by imparting instruction with advanced curriculum, and research methodologies in modern areas of Computer Science. The Computer Science and Information Systems department at BITS Hyderabad started admitting students from 2008, the year of inception of Hyderabad campus. The CSIS Dept offers B.E (Hons) Computer Science, M.E Computer Science as well as Ph.D. programmes. Apart from these programmes, we also offer a Minor programme in Data Science to equip our students to meet the requirements of the industry from the Data Science applications. The CSIS Dept has a vibrant student strength of around 1000. The department has a good mix of faculty with experience from reputed academic institutes and industry. The department offers a wide range of courses spanning areas like Algorithms, Theoretical Computer Science, Computer Architecture and Organization, Systems and Networks, Databases, Software engineering and Soft computing. The Dept has faculty expertise in various niche areas like Blockchain Technology, Natural Language Processing, Reinforcement Learning, Bio-Inspired Algorithms, Internet of Things, Cloud Computing, Human Computer Interaction, Computational Neuroscience and Cyber Physical Systems. The department lays emphasis on the hands-on aspects of learning through academic computing laboratories and computer oriented projects to make the students industry-ready. We also have thesis/dissertations to inculcate research aptitude in our students. The CSIS Department consistently attracts top BITSAT scorers every year. The CSIS Department is committed to achieving high standards of excellence in academic and research activities over the coming years.
The CSIS Dept has faculty expertise in areas like Computer Networks, Distributed Computing Systems, Information Security, Cloud Computing, Cloud Security and Cloud Forensics, Online Social Networks, Data Privacy, Internet of Things, Blockchain Technology, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), Databases, Data Science and Data Analytics, Computer Architecture, Cyber Security and Secure Information Systems, Information and Communication Technologies and Development (ICTD) and Human Computer Interaction (HCI), Algorithms and Computational Geometry, Natural Language Processing (NLP), Software Engineering, Theoretical & Computational Neuroscience. The department has research scholars in full time, part time as well as aspirant schemes. The full time scholars pursue their Ph.D. with funding from the Institute or from external agencies like DST, MeitY, UGC etc. The faculty members collaborate with researchers from India as well abroad. Students get funded research opportunities under several fellowships like ASCRIN, DAAD, Viterbi-India etc.

Many eminent professionals from Industry have delivered talks in entrepreneurship, challenges & rewards in software engineering, quantum reality and objective semantic information etc. The department has also organized seminars and workshops on topics like business challenges in data warehousing and data mining, lean for leadership: lessons from corporate jungle, challenges in animation industry, network design and development strategies for sensor networks etc. to make them Industry ready. The faculty members from the department supervise the activities of the two student associations, CSA, and EXTEK. The department also helps students from all other streams of engineering and science in honing their programming skills by conducting hands-on training programs and certificate courses from time to time on topics like web programming, data structures, object oriented design, Android programming etc. The department helps the student members in managing the activities of the ACM Student Chapter at BITS Hyderabad Campus.
