Colonel Soumyabrata Chakraborty graduated from BITS Pilani in 1988 with a B.E. (Hons) in Civil Engineering. He has also done MTech in Quality Management through BITS-WILP. He was placed as a Graduate Trainee in Tata Steel through campus selection in 1988 and worked there for five years. The lure of the uniform and love for the nation made him join the combat engineers of the Indian Armed Forces in 1993. While serving with the Army he participated in various combat and civil engineering activities during operations and peace. He has performed various combat engineering tasks like construction of bridges, construction of habitat, operational tracks and roads, water supply, minefield laying and demining operations and neutralisation of improvised explosive devices. He has served in counter insurgency operational areas in Jammu and Kashmir and the North East and participated in Operation Rakshak in Jammu and Kashmir, Operation Vijay (Kargil), Operation Parakram (Post Parliament Attack) and Operation Rhino (North East). He retired from the Indian Army in April 2020 as a selection grade Colonel. He has also served on deputation from the Indian Army in the Border Roads Organisation, Rashtriya Rifles, Army Welfare Housing Organisation and as Chief Executive in Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata. Before joining BITS Pilani, he was serving as the Registrar of IIT Palakkad.
