About the Faculty

Uttara was born in Kolkata, West Bengal. She completed her bachelor's degree in Chemistry from Presidency College, Kolkata (2005-2008) and moved to Bangalore to pursue the Integrated-PhD program at the Indian Institute of Science (2008-2015). During her PhD in the group of Prof. Akhil R. Chakravarty, she developed iron-based photosensitizers that could be excited with near-IR light for photodymanic therapy.
After completion of her PhD, she did her postdoctoral research at University of Miami, United States (2016-2017) with Prof. Shanta Dhar working on biodegradable, therapeutic nanoparticles against cancers, neurological diseases and viral infections. She then moved to Chimie ParisTech, France (2017-2018) in the group of Prof. Gilles Gasser, where she worked on nanoparticle formulations encapsulating novel photosensitizers for photodynamic therapy. She briefly spent some time in the group of Prof. Kortz (Jacobs University, Germany) as a visiting scientist before joining the group of Prof. Ingo Ott at TU Braunschweig, Germany (2019-2022) where she worked various projects using organometallic gold complexes for anticancer and antimicrobial applications.
 
She joined the Chemistry Department at BITS-Pilani K K Birla Goa Campus in May 2022 as an Assistant Professor.
 
Uttara enjoys travelling, reading novels and good food.
