Widely recognized as a research and teaching department, the Humanities and Social Sciences at BITS Pilani, K. K. Birla Goa Campus, was established in 2004. Since its inception the department, which also hosted the management stream but was later merged into the department of Economics, has long been known for its innovations and excellence in teaching and research. The department is dedicated to recruiting faculty members from newer research areas alongside traditional disciplines. It provides support and autonomy to the individual teachers to develop their areas and introduce new courses, particularly in interdisciplinary areas. The expertise of the faculty members range from Shakespearean studies, literary theory, ecocriticism, film studies, meta-cognitive studies, tourism studies to developmental studies, disaster management, environmental social sciences, maritime studies, qualitative psychology, mental health and professional ethics.

The department aims at enriching the knowledge and awareness of students in various areas of humanistic and socio-scientific studies and enhancing their creative and critical thinking skills thereby enabling them to become well-rounded human beings, committed to the society, and to excel in their professional and personal lives.

Research Opportunities

Faculty members carry out and guide research in the following areas:


English language and literature, Mass media, Professional Communication, Philosophy, Psychology, Sociology, Political Science, Public Policy, Maritime Studies, Spiritual Intelligence.


Two faculty members are pursuing research and working towards their Ph.D. degree. Two faculty members are carrying out research projects funded by ICSSR and UGC.  Four research proposals have been  submitted to ICSSR and ICMR to attract financial support and are awaiting results.  Faculty members have guided and are guiding Ph.D. students of both BITS and other Institutions and also act Ph.D. examiners and paper setters for various universities.


The Department has 5 full-time,8 part time Research Scholars and 2 lecturers pursuing their Ph.D.

The Department has 13 faculty members with 87% of them with Ph.D. degrees. There are 9 faculty members in English, Communication and Media Studies and 6 faculty members  in areas namely. Sociology, Philosophy, Political Studies, etc. With  3 Associate Professors, 7 Assistant Professors, 2 Lecturers and  1 Visiting Faculty ( Assistant Professor) the Department is not only involved in teaching courses but also contribute to the Institute’s administration by actively participating in its various activities related to PR, Publications, Practice School, Academic Counseling, General Administration, etc. Faculty members guide PhD students, examine PhD thesis for other institutions, publish research papers in reputed national and international journals, publish books, write columns in leading newspapers, review research papers, present papers in conferences; act as members of editorial board in reputed journals and members of the Senate and Board of Studies in external institutions; members of various committees at BITS Pilani.

Dr. Parichay Patra presented a paper titled 'Cinema, Politics and the Contemporary: Absence and Astrophysics' in the Ireland India Institute Conference on South Asia, Dublin City University, 26-27 April, 2018.

Dr. Parichay Patra was a visiting scholar for the month of June 2018 at the Instituto de Investigaciones Gino Germani, Faculty of Social Sciences (Facultad de Ciencias Sociales), universidad de Buenos Aires, Argentina and also will be a key note speaker at the VI International and IX National Conference on History, Art and Politics (VI Jornadas Internacionales y IX Nacionales de Historia, Arte y  Política), organized by the Dept. of History and Theory of Art (Derpartamento de Historia y Teoría del Arte), Faculty of Arts (Facultad de Arte), Universidad Nacional del Centro de la Provincia de Buenos Aires, Tandil, Argentina, on 21-23 June, 2018.

Research Scholar, Mr. Sushant Kishore presented a paper titled ‘Performing the Hindu Nation: Quotidian Simulations of Hindu Nationalism’ at the 25th International Medieval Congress Conference at the University of Leeds, 2-5th July 2018.

Rayson K. Alex, S. Susan Deborah, Reena Cheruvalath and Gyan Prakash edited and published a book entitled 

"Ecocultural Ethics: Critical Essays" (Lexington, USA) in 2017. (ISBN 978-1-4985-3247-1)2.


Rayson K. Alex and S. Susan Deborah edited and published a book entitled "Ecodocumentaries: Critical Essays"

Rayson K. Alex delivered the keynote address titled “Self in neotinai, indigeneous cosmopolitics and Indian indigenity" at the 1oth National conference of SRM University, Chennai, themed "Nature, Culture, Language and
Literature: Narratives and Critical Practices" on 16th and 17th of April, 2018.

Papers Presented:
1.    "tinai" at the International Conference on Literature and Environment: The promise of Ecological Criticsm held at University of Kashmir, Srinagar, from 26th to 28th March 2018.
2. "Voices of Eco-resistance in India: A Critique of Neoliberal Natures" in the International Conference on Rust/Resistance: Works of Recovery held at Wayne State University, Detroit MI, USA from 20-24 June.
Dr. K.A. Geetha presented a paper titled “Fiction and Reality: The Politics of Panchami Lands at the International Conference on Emerging Trends in Multidisciplinary Research in association with The American College, Madurai & Roots International Journal on Multidisciplinary Researches at the Umar Pulavar Tamil Language Centre Singapore held from 27th- 30th December 2017.
Dr. Amitendu Bhattacharya presented a paper titled " Accounting for Taste: Culinary and Alimentary ReConfigurations in Colonial Bengal" at the International Conference “Writing/Righting Wrongs/ Agravious del pasado, re-creaciones del presente”, organized by the Spanish Association for Interdisciplinary India Studies and the Departament de Filologia Anglesa i de Germanistica, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Spain from 29 November to 1 December 2017.
