Dr. Abhinava Chatterjee joined the Department of Mechanical Engineering, BITS Pilani K K Birla Goa campus in June 2024. Previously, he was working as Early Postdoctoral Researcher and Senior Project Scientist at IIT Delhi after obtaining his PhD. He received his Ph.D from Department of Mechanical Engineering of Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, India in 2022, M. Tech from Department of Mechanical Engineering at IIT (ISM Dhanbad), India in 2014, and B. Tech in Mechanical Engineering from WBUT in 2012. After masters he has been completely interested in working in Academia and joined as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering  at DIT University Dehradun, India and worked there for a semester July- Dec 2014. Thereafter he came into this interesting field of pursuing research.

Dr. Chatterjee works in the area of Mechanical Design (to develop equipment design), Tribology (friction, wear, and lubrication of materials), Biomechanics (Engineering behind human body activities) and Nanosciences (The physics of materials leading to its unique behaviour at molecular scales) at multiple time and lengthscales with a focus to solve complex mechanical problems in conventional, advanced materials and biomaterials. He has also worked on macroscale tribology of Heavy Earth Moving Machinery and hydraulic leakage problems in extreme conditions. In his doctoral research, he has worked on understanding the fundamental mechanisms of occurrence of ultralow friction and superior lubrication in human joints from a molecular perspective using atomistic level simulations. He has independently explored the area of multiscale mechanics of soft materials for improving tissue health, developing smart intelligent biomimetic materials. He takes a lot of interest in deeper investigation of complex research problems for example, nature and bio-inspired mechanisms to solve design challenges from scratch and reveal interfacial interaction mechanics which might have implications for advanced engineering solutions. Analysis of biomaterials at multiple scales lays the foundation of new material development and brings out insights of interesting unknown complex mechanisms which may have design implications.

Dr. Abhinava Chatterjee is a recipient of Young Tribologist Award from TTRF Japan for his seminal contribution to the Nanoscale biotribology in natural human joints.

His current research is fundamental and speculates to be collaborative for a transtition into application oriented which have broader impacts. This involves understanding length scale effects of contact problems, soft contacts, superlubricity, material behavior, mechanics, and improving implant design.

Dr. Chatterjee is committed to advancing his research group in soft materials, biolubrication, smart bio-composites, developing biomimetic materials, understanding the multi-scale material behavior, and develop smart materials for industrial applications.
