Senior Professor Emeritus
Having completed his tenure as the Distinguished Visiting Professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering of Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, Prof. Gautam Biswas has joined as the Senior Professor Emeritus at the Department of Mechanical Engineering of BITS-Pilani, K K Birla Goa Campus in January 2025.
His total tenure in various capacities at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur lasted from 1990 to 2024. Earlier, Prof. Biswas has been Director of the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (2013-2019), and Director of the CSIR-Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute (CMERI) at Durgapur (2009-2013). He has been a JC Bose National Fellow since 2011. He was the G.D. and V.M. Mehta Endowed Chair Professor, and Dean of academic affairs at IIT Kanpur. The research group led by Professor Biswas at IIT Kanpur identified the phenomenon of Rayleigh-Taylor Instability during the bubble formation in film boiling. This was a significant addition to the classical theory, based on Taylor Helmholtz instability.
Prof. Biswas completed his Baccalaureate from BE College (IIEST) in 1979. He completed his master’s and PhD from IIT Kharagpur in the years 1981 and 1985 respectively. He was a Humboldt Fellow in Germany in 1987 and 1988; and JSPS invited fellow in Japan 1994. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). He has served a full term as the Associate Editor of the Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer (Trans ASME). He is a fellow of the Asian Union of Thermal Science and Engineering (AUTSE). He was a Guest Professor at the Friedrich Alexander University of Erlangen-Nuremberg in 2002. Currently he is an Associate Editor of the well-known CFD-Journal, - Computer and Fluids.
Prof Gautam Biswas is a Fellow of all four major Academies of India, namely, the Indian National Science Academy (INSA, New Delhi), the Indian Academy of Sciences (IAS, Bangalore), the National Academy of Sciences India (NASI) and the Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE). He is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers India (IEI). Prof. Biswas delivered the prestigious Prof. CNR Rao lecture at IIT Kanpur in the year 2010. Prof. Biswas was bestowed with Distinguished Alumnus Award by IIEST, Shibpur in the year 2013. He has been awarded the Distinguished Alumnus Award by the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur in 2016. Prof. Biswas was conferred with an Honorary Doctorate (Honoris Causa) by the National Institute of Technology Agartala, India, in 2017. He has been conferred an Honorary Doctorate by the Aristotle University of Greece, in the year 2018. Prof. Biswas delivered the prestigious Sectional Lecture in Fluid Mechanics at the International Conference in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (ICTAM-2024) in Daegu, Korea.
Prof Biswas has been bestowed with the 2023 ASME Heat Transfer Memorial Award in the Science Category for Sustained and Outstanding Contributions to Thermal Science and Engineering, including Heat Transfer Enhancement, Phase Change Heat Transfer with and without Electrohydrodynamic Forces and Dynamics of Liquid Jet and Droplet Impingement.
In recognition of his stellar contributions in the fields of Fluid Mechanics and Thermal Sciences, his contributions as an academic administrator and his dedicated service to the institute, IIT Kanpur conferred upon Professor Gautam Biswas the award of INSTITUTE FELLOW for the year 2020. The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur also conferred the Distinguished Teacher Award for the year 2022 on Professor Biswas.
