Chromatin Architecture, Transcription & Genomics (CATG) Group

Research theme: One of the miracles of living systems is how the same genetic information is decoded into divergent phenotypic traits (cell states). Cell states are associated with distinct gene expression patterns, chromatin features, and epigenetic signatures. This encrypted information is processed dynamically from the condensed structure of DNA known as chromatin. Stability of chromatin organization and its plasticity to change are precisely titrated during normal development and physiology. Genetic, environmental, and metabolic stimuli can disrupt this homeostatic balance by altering epigenome to make the chromatin aberrantly restrictive or permissive, thus opposing or facilitating cell-state transitions.

  • We aim to decipher chromatin basis of transcriptional regulatory code that governs cellular identity, and phenotypic plasticity driving cell-state transitions using NGS-based genomics, epigenomics and trascriptomics tools.
  • We employ systems biology approach to integrate different types of genome-scale data to understand transcriptional regulatory programs underlying development and differentiation, and how dysregulation in these programs leads to disease states.

Genome Informatics Lab

Our interdisciplinary research combines both experimental and computational approaches. The "Dry Lab" -  Genome Informatics Lab - is situated in A-115 and "Wet Lab" in A-110. We employ bioinformatics & computational biology approaches for analysis, visualization and integration of NGS-based large scale biological datasets to uncover mysteries of life hidden in our DNA sequence.

Prof Amartya Sanyal is an expert in the field of genomics and epigenomics. Prof. Sanyal has published in top-tier journals with combined citations of >17,500 and h-index of 15. He received his PhD degree from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India working on differential gene regulation in meiotic and post-meiotic human germ cells during spermatogenesis. Prof. Sanyal was associated with ENCODE (ENCyclopedia Of DNA Elements) project consortium during his postdoctoral training under Prof. Job Dekker, HHMI Investigator at UMass Chan Medical School, Worcester. USA. Prof. Sanyal started his independent scientific career in 2014 as Nanyang Assistant Professor in Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. While at NTU, Sanyal lab has published the first chromosome-level gapless genome assembly of Candida tropicalis MYA 3404. In collaboration, Sanyal lab developed a number of computational tools/software  viz., CNAtra, HiCNAtra, AStra, etc. for ploidy and CNV analysis as well as for Hi-C normalization. Prof. Sanyal’s lab at BITS-Pilani Hyderabad Campus is well equipped in conducting NGS-based experiments such as RNA-seq, ChIP-seq, Hi-C and WGS and their downstream data analysis.
