About the Faculty
Jayabrata graduated from the NIT Durgapur (India) with a Mechanical Engineering degree in Bachelors in 2011 and IIT Kharagpur (India) with a Joint Masters-PhD Degree in 2017. His doctoral research focused on the dynamics of complex electrorheological (ER) fluids in micro-confinements. Specifically, he studied how electrical double layers can be used to activate and modulate the rheological complexity and flow structures of ER fluids in narrow conduits. Thereafter, Jayabrata joined the University of Rennes 1 (DIMENV Group) as a postdoc to study the mechanism of carbon dioxide sequestration through a porous medium using experiments and numerics. Jayabrata moved to the Sengupta Lab in November 2019 as a HFSP Fellow, where he used a combination of physical and biological approaches to decode the underlying physics of the transition of bacterial colonies to biofilms, and the ecology of bloom forming phytoplankton under nutrient stress conditions-observables common in a warming climate. He joined BITS Pilani, Hyderabad Campus in the Department of Mechanical Engineering in March 2022. Presently his research interests are: Hydrodynamic instabilities in porous medium, Mixing and chaos in active biological systems and Active flows in liquid crystals.
