Despite decades of concentrated effort, a quantum-theoretic understanding of the nature of space
and time still eludes us. Many of the great open problems of fundamental physics belong to the
pure realm of quantum gravity, the holy grail of physics. A consistent quantum theory of gravity
would successfully address the following key issues: Big bang and black hole singularities, the
information loss puzzle in black holes, the notorious cosmological constant problem, the question
of cosmological vacuum selection, the dimensionality of spacetime, and so on. My
research interests encompass a range of topics in theoretical physics including the AdS/CFT
correspondence, quantum field theory and the classical and quantum nature of black holes.
