The Indian Mathematics and Women (IWM) Annual Conference 2024 concluded with great enthusiasm at BITS Pilani, K K Birla Goa Campus, Goa, from July 11 to 13, 2024. This significant event, co-organised by IWM and the Department of Mathematics, BITS Pilani, K K Birla Goa Campus, was supported by the National Board for Higher Mathematics, DAE, Govt. of India, and the Committee for Women in Mathematics, International Mathematical Union. It brought together around 120 participants from across India, including esteemed delegates from Nepal. Prof. Riddhi Shah, the Convener of the IWM Annual Conference from JNU, along with the IWM Executive Committee, provided an overview of IWM's activities. Prof. Meenal Kowshik, Dean of Administration at BITS Pilani, addressed the participants.
Established in 2009, IWM aims to empower and encourage women in pursuing higher education and careers in mathematics. The conference served as a platform to foster an inclusive environment and provide exposure to emerging trends in the field.
The sessions at the conference encompassed a diverse range of topics, featuring Plenary sessions, Invited talks, Contributed talks, presentations by Early Stage Mathematicians, and engaging Poster presentations. Notable among these was a special lecture titled "On Mathematical Journey of V. Lakshmibai," delivered by Prof. K N Raghavan from Krea University. The lecture celebrated the pioneering work of V. Lakshmibai in Algebraic Geometry, focusing on flag varieties and Schubert varieties.
The conference also dedicated a session to address the challenges faced by women in mathematics. Participants engaged in discussions aimed at identifying these challenges and proposing effective measures to support and empower women mathematicians. The conference also provided an opportunity for the mathematics community in Goa to connect with the larger community in India and become acquainted with the activities of IWM. This event laid a strong foundation for future endeavors in promoting gender equity and excellence in mathematics. As the field continues to evolve, such initiatives play a crucial role in shaping a more inclusive and vibrant mathematical community.
