The Department of Mathematics at BITS-Pilani K.K. Birla Goa Campus was established right from the inception of the institute in 2004. It has faculty members from diverse research areas of pure and applied mathematics, such as Analysis, Algebra, Differential Equations, Number Theory, Numerical Analysis, Mathematical Biology, Graph Theory and Financial Mathematics. The department offers B.E. (Math & Computing), M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs. The department has several projects funded by national and international agencies. The department also has DST-FIST Scientific Computing Lab funded by DST under the Level-1 program. The department is actively involved in conducting several events like weekly colloquiums, national and international workshops, and conferences.
The B.E. program in Mathematics and Computing is designed to equip students with a strong foundation in mathematics, data science, and computational thinking, enabling them to develop and apply analytical and problem-solving skills in a variety of fields in Science and Engineering. With a focus on both theoretical and computational aspects of mathematics and scientific computing, this program will prepare students for a wide range of careers in industries, academia, and research & development.
Career Opportunities
While one of the key objectives is to have an appropriate blend of strong Mathematical and Statistical concepts with required Computer Science basics, the proposed program is framed on Computing with emphasis on Data Sciences, Computational Finance, and Scientific Computing and it is then perceived to be a unique program in our country. One distinctive feature of this program is hands-on Computing in terms of Lab courses. The proposed program is dynamic because it has enough flexibility to choose electives amongst the baskets of Computing courses, Math and Stat electives, and Open Electives. Apart from PS-I, there is a provision either to go for a project jointly with industry personnel or Project + electives in the final semester. While existing computing components of Computer Science (CS) are on the design and development of efficient algorithms, the proposed new program emphasizes the design, development, and analysis of robust, but efficient algorithms that provide rigorous mathematical and statistical justifications as to why those algorithms work. The products of this program are perceived to be two in one and this program will have its own strength.
The program is designed in such a way that after important foundational courses, students can choose courses as per their interest in a particular domain of Scientific Computing, Computational Finance, and Data Science. The program aims to produce undergraduates who are well-versed in a broad range of mathematical and computational concepts, techniques, and tools, through which they can handle complex real-world problems.
