Prime Movers & Fluid Machines Lab

Prime Movers & Fluid Machines Lab

Lab Overview

The Prime Movers and Fluid Machines lab provides a platform for the students to understand and apply the concepts learnt in the theory course. It introduces the students to the commonly used fluid machines like pumps and compressors and scaled down models of hydraulic turbines. It also includes few experiments on IC Engines. The experiments are mainly focused on obtaining the Performance Characteristics curves for the respective machines. The students also learn about the errors and biases that may affect their experiments and also to quantify the uncertainty in the measurements.

Key Experiments with Learning Outcomes

  • Study the characteristics of the Pelton-Wheel turbine
    • Obtain the Main Characteristics curves
    • Obtain the Operating Characteristics curves
  • Single cylinder four stroke Diesel Engine
    • Performance testing at constant speed
    • Prepare the heat balance sheet
  • Study of Reciprocating pump
    • Obtain the pump characteristics at different heads
    • Determine the efficiency for different speeds and heads
  • Study of Centrifugal pump
    • Obtain the pump characteristics at different heads
    • Determine the efficiency for different speeds and heads
    • Verify the pump laws
